The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has warned prepay subscribers in the country that their SIM cards will be deactivated at the end of the year if they have not been registered with the mobile networks.
In line with an increasing number of countries, the regulator imposed rules earlier this year requiring all prepay accounts to be linked to an individual owner.
The communications sector watchdog's Corporate Communications Manager Innocent Mungy issued the caution during an interview with The Guardian newspaper.
He added that there wouldn't be any extension of the deadline as customers have had six months since the original announcement to register their SIM cards. At the end of November, some 5 million accounts had been registered, although the country has around 15 million mobile phones in circulation.
